Matilda, Tolkien live and a darkly funny Gate night

Fellowship of the Ring with a 100-piece orchestra, plus bathroom-wall comedy and a Birr Castle talk on war and wardrobes.

First proper weekend of October and the clocks haven’t turned yet, so there’s still a bit of evening to play with. The big swing is in the 3Arena, where Howard Shore’s score for The Fellowship of the Ring gets played live to the film by a full orchestra and choir. Plenty else to fill a Friday or Sunday too. Here’s what’s on.

Making a night of it in town

If the Fellowship concert or a Gate show has you lingering in the city, a central stay saves you the late dash home. A night near the quays or around Leeson Street puts you walking distance from most of this week’s picks. Find a Dublin stay
