Historic buildings and monuments in Co. Dublin

County Dublin has 4,224 recorded archaeological monuments in the national Sites and Monuments Record; the 246 buildings below are the county's entries in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) rated International or National, out of 7,535 recorded post-1700 structures county-wide.

Monuments to visit

Please note that many of these monuments may be on private land and may not be publicly accessible. When setting out to visit monuments please ensure that you wear appropriate footwear and clothing. Access to monuments without Visitor Services may be across uneven ground which may not be suitable for everyone and, in particular, wheelchair users.

  • Building
    Casino Marino, Dublin City
    The Casino was designed by Sir William Chambers as a pleasure house for James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont.
  • Prison
    Kilmainham Gaol
    One of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland's emergence as a modern nation from 1780s to the 1920s.
  • Megalithic tomb - wedge tomb
    Kilmashogue Megalithic Tomb
    Today the wedge tomb at Kilmashogue is located in forestry, but originally it would have been situated on an open mountain side overlooking the lowlands now occupied by Dublin city.
